Remember, remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot…
Our annual tradition of sizzling sparklers and impressive displays on cold Bonfire nights stems way, way back to 1605. We celebrate Guy Fawkes’ arrest by creating wild bonfires and hosting winter parties, but why?

Spark, spark, boom!
Guy Fawkes was a Catholic extremist who was caught with barrels of gunpowder in an attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. We began to burn effigies of Guy Fawkes to remind everyone that treason will never be forgiven or forgotten. It’s a bit less common to see at bonfires these days, but they are often made up out of a jacket and trousers stuffed with straw, and a pumpkin head on top.
A penny for the Guy…
An old Scottish tradition in the days leading up to Bonfire night involved preparing the ‘Guy’ early, and wheeling him around the local neighbourhood in a pram or wheelbarrow, with a sign and a bowl saying ‘Penny for the Guy’. They money was then used to buy fireworks with for the displays.

We’re feeling brainy...
The thunderous boom heard as a firework explodes is caused by air in the object expanding faster than the speed of sound, and the beautiful colours the fireworks give off depend on a combination of chemicals (sales and metal oxides) which react when mixed to give off a huge variety of colours.
