There’s something about a new arrival in the family or amongst your pals that inevitably leads to frivolous spending. As anyone who knows me will tell you, frivolous spending is an activity I’m rather fond of, but having recently been a new mum myself and been showered with baby gifts of every description, I think the ideal baby gift should be both practical and completely and utterly adorable. And as you might imagine I’m all for keeping it Scottish-made or Scottish-designed.
Here at Gillian Kyle we do love a bit of organic cotton; its green, ethically responsible and just so lovely and soft. That’s why all of our Scottish baby vests and bibs are hand printed onto the softest organic cotton in pure white. I especially love the new Haggis print; if you have Scottish friends or family abroad with a wee tot, this is a fun way to make sure they stay firmly connected with their Scottish roots!
If you’re looking to spend a bit more, Brora’s Cashmere Inca Booties are ideal. I personally think that babyhood should be as colourful an affair as possible so these are right up my street. They have a sweet little knitted tie to make sure that fidgety wee hands can’t pull them off and the Scottish cashmere feels wonderfully soft against teeny wee feet. Love!
If its a very special baby indeed, Scottish knitwear designers Roam have teamed up with the very fabulous Donna Wilson to create some pretty snazzy cashmere baby blankets in Donna’s signature quirky style. I’m not a big fan of overly-schmaltzy designs for babies, so I especially love the Baby Owl design which is as cool as it is cute.
These soft, floppy-eared bunnies from My Baboo are suitable from birth, handmade from pure Scottish wool and definitely designed to be loved. Awwww.....
And finally, for a 'wee minding' (as my Gran always used to say) I think my Tunnock's Teacake baby bib is a great bet. Its not going to break the bank at £8.50, and its pretty cute, even if I do say so myself.
